Wollastonite in Building Material

Advantages - Wollastonite as a fibre for cement products

Wolkem’s milled and HAR Wollastonite grades are an excellent additive for industrial Insulation applications such as production of corrugated roofing sheets, slabs and foamed products. It is commonly used wherever non-asbestos fire-resistant additives are required in the construction industry. Wollastonite has excellent thermal insulating property and is widely used in fire protection applications, thermal insulation applications, and electrical resistance applications.

Wollastonite imparts-

  • Wollastonite is having its uniqueness for fibre cement board and concrete that is both temperature-resistant and fire-resistant.
  • Different wollastonite grades can be combined with other ingredients to improve strength and cracking resistance in concrete.
  • Wolkem’ s Wollastonite is ideal for improving the durability of pavement sealants.
  • Wolkem’ s Wollastonite is non carcinogenic natural filler available in india.
  • Wollastonite is resistant to chemical attack, stable at high temperatures, and improves flexural and tensile strength in composites.

Recommended Grades-

  • Kemolit KW-60
  • Kemolit H-60
  • Kemolit FC-44N

Wollastonite in Cement

Wollastonite is formed through a natural process, including metamorphism, high – temperature reactions and hydrothermal processes. During these processes, the high temperature and pressure causes the calcium and magnesium ions to combine with the silicon and oxygen ions to form wollastonite.
It occurs as aggregates of bladed or needle-like crystals with hardness of 4.5 on Mohs’ scale.

The chemical composition clearly depicts its potential to be used in cement.

SiO2 present in Wollastonite is associated with Ca. This SiO2 is different than the SiO2 present (in any form) in the Limestone and any other cement raw material additives.

Trial with Wollastonite conducted at one of the India’s best cement industry governing institute illustrate that – Wollastonite imparts following  :

Clinker Quality Improvement by use of 1% Wollastonite:
  • Reduction in Free Lime content in clinker, due to 1% addition of Wollastonite Grade WGR50. This improved the quality of Clinker with the uniform sized nodules at all fractions.
  • Clinker Color was also uniform which helps in homogeneous clinker formation and better-quality cement.
Stability of Kiln:
  • Kiln stability improved by adding 1% of WRG50 grade Wollastonite.
  • Helps in Smooth Process Operation.

Established that it is “Mineralizer”:

  • As stated in the study, it was proved that it controls the Free Lime and acts as a “Mineralizer” during clinker formation.
  • It lowers the Temperature of Phase Formation results in Fuel savings.
Saving costs by lowering the need of High-Grade Limestone addition.
  • It acts as an Ultimate mineralizer and controls the usages of High-Grade Limestone by controlling LSF during clinker formation.

Fuel Savings:

  • Phase Formation starts at low Temperatures by adding 1% WRG50. This results in Fuel savings and low carbon (CO2) emissions. Carbon Credits.

Better Clinker Production:

  • In Grain size good burnability with uniform color of clinker nodules.
  • Better phase formation of C₃S,C₂S,C₃A & C₄AF.

Energy Saving:

  • The Hybrid Clinker (Made by using WRG50) can be ground more efficiently and with more output thanks to its easy and smooth grindability possible using WRG50.

Recommended Grades-

  • Kemolit WRG-50
