Metallurgy
Wollastonite is a naturally occurring calcium meta silicate mineral with the molecular formula CaSiO3. Wollastonite is unique among non-metallic industrial minerals for its combination of white colour, acicular (needle-like) crystal shape and alkaline pH.
Advantages of Wollastonite in Metallurgical application:
- Reduce nozzle blockages
- Absorbs non-metallic inclusion
- Works as natural low temperature flux,
- It absorbs alumina.
- Adds reinforcement and thermal shock resistance to metal casting plasters.
- Virtually no finishing needed for casting after removal from mould
- It is readily fusible and gives low viscosity resulting in higher flow ability.
- Prevents re oxidation
CCMP – Continuous Casting Mold Powders
- Low aspect ratio Wollastonite grades are used up to 40%.
- Wollastonite Provides – ready fusibility, good insulating qualities, & low viscosity fluxes.
- During continuous casting high fluidity of molten, wollastonite helps to minimize breakouts & reduce mold wear by lowering the overall viscosity.
- The low thermal conductivity & low bulk density of wollastonite in unmeted layers provides a uniform insulating cover.
